AN EXTREMELY RARE MID 13TH CENTURY ENGLISH OAK AND POLYCHROMED SCULPTURE OF ST BENEDICT. CIRCA 1250.

THIS WONDERFUL AND RARE ENGLISH SCULPTURE OF ST BENEDICT WEARING A DALMATIC/TUNIC IS HOLDING A BOOK AND AN ABBOTS STAFF. HE RETAINS A MAJOR PART OF HIS ORIGINAL POLYCHROME DECORATION WITH GILDING AND QUATREFOIL FLOWERS TO HIS TUNIC. THE SPARSE SACK-LIKE DRAPERY FOLDS MOST DIRECTLY RELATE TO EAST ENGLISH MANUSCRIPTS AND WALL PAINTINGS OF THE MIDDLE OF THE 13TH CENTURY. THE HOLLOWED BACK WAS ONCE SEALED WITH A PANEL WHICH MAY HAVE HELD RELICS.
