A EARLY 17TH CENTURY OAK AND POLYCHROMED CARVING OF ST ANTHONY.

STANDING ON ORIGINAL SQUARE BASE. PROBABLY SPANISH. PROVENANCE- EX HOWARD NEVILLE COLLECTION. SAINT ANTHONY WAS BORN 1195 AND WAS A CELEBRATED FOLLOWER OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI. HE IS PATRON SAINT OF TRAVELLERS, THE POOR AND THOSE WHO HAVE LOST THINGS. HE IS IDENTIFIABLE BY THE THREE KNOTS ON THE CORD AROUND HIS WAIST, REPRESENTING HIS VOWS OF POVERTY, CHASTITY AND OBEDIENCE.
