THIS CARVED STONE BUST DEPICTS A CISTERIAN MONK WITH HIS TONGUE OUT, TRACES OF OLD PAINT REMAIN.

REPUTEDLY FROM JERVAULX ABBEY IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES, THE ABBEY WAS FOUNDED IN 1156 AND WAS ONCE A GREAT CISTERCIAN MONASTERY IN THE NORTH YORKSHIRE DALES, PLUNDERED AND PILLAGED DURING THE DISSOLUTION OF THE MONASTRIES IN THE 16TH CENTURY. THE ABBEY NOW STANDS AS AN ENCHANTING AND ATMOSPHERIC RUIN WHICH ATTRACTS VISITORS ALL YEAR ROUND.
