AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND IMPORTANT MEDIEVAL OAK CONFESSIONAL CHAIR. NORMAN. CIRCA 1470.

THIS AMAZINGLY RARE MUSEUM QUALITY MEDIEVAL CONFESSIONAL CHAIR STANDS 8FT 8" IN HEIGHT. IT HAS A VERY UNUSUAL FOOD/ BREAD CUPBOARD TO THE TOP WITH CARVED PERFORATED ROUNDELS TO THE DOORS, GOTHIC TRACERY AND PERFORATED SIDE PANELS. BELOW THE UPPER TWO DOORS CARVED IN LATIN SCRIPT IS ITS DEDICATION TO THE VIRGIN MARY PILCHRA-LAETITIA TRANSLATED TO BEAUTIFUL/BOUNTIFUL VIRGIN. THE CHAIR BACK IS PROFUSELY CARVED WITH GOTHIC TRACERY CENTRED BY A COAT OF ARMS, THE SIDE DOOR AGAIN CARVED WITH PIERCED TRACERY, ABOVE THIS DOOR THERE IS A CIRCULAR WITCH MARK AND A KEY TO WARD OFF ALL EVIL SPIRITS, ALSO TO THE RIGHT OF THE DOOR IS A RIBBON CARVED INTO THE OAK. TO THE RIGHT OF THE THRONE CHAIR THERE IS A WONDERFULLY CARVED AND SPIRAL TWIST COLUMN, TOPPED BY A LEAF CARVED CAPITAL. THE SEAT OPENS TO A BOX FOR STORAGE. THE FRONT OF THE BOX SEAT IS CARVED WITH LINENFOLD PANELS AGAIN CENTRED BY A COAT OF ARMS.THE LEFT SIDE AND THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE ALSO HAVE LINENFOLD CARVED PANELS.

THIS PROBABLY UNIQUE CONFESSIONAL CHAIR WAS PROBABLY COMMISSIONED FOR A WEALTHY MERCHANTS PRIVATE CHAPEL.

WITH ORIGINAL IRON WORK AND HINGES, THE UPPER DOOR HANDLES ARE IDENTICAL IRON REPLACEMENTS POSSIBLY 19TH CENTURY.
