The Picts were Iron Age peoples in ancient and early medieval northern Scotland, known by Romans as "Picti" (painted people) for their body art, who resisted Roman conquest and formed powerful kingdoms, eventually merging with Gaels to form the kingdom of Alba, the precursor to modern Scotland. They were a confederation of tribes, skilled farmers, warriors, and artisans, known for unique carved stones and symbols, but left few written records, making their culture somewhat mysterious.
