A VERY RARE ENGLISH OAK AUMBRY. CIRCA 1490.
THE SINGLE PLANK TOP ABOVE A FRONT CARVED WITH PERFORATED GOTHIC TRACERY CUT INTO THE SOLID FOR THE VENTILATION OF FOOD, CANDLES AND WINE TO BE STORED INSIDE. THE TOP DOOR HAS CIRCULAR GOTHIC TRACERY DECORATION AND THE BOTTOM PLAIN IN APPEARANCE, BOTH WITH THE ORIGINAL HINGES. IT IS EXTREMELY RARE TO FIND ONE OF THESE ENGLISH AUMBRYS WHICH HAS NOT UNDERGONE SOME REPAIRS OVER THE CENTURIES, THIS ONE HAS PROBABLY BEEN REPAIRED AND RESTORED IN THE 17TH/18TH CENTURIES. FOR ALMOST IDENTICAL EXAMPLES SEE AGE OF OAK BY PERCY MACQUOID FIGURES 2 AND 3.
