AN EXTREMELY RARE ENGLISH 15TH CENTURY NOTTINGHAMSHIRE ALABASTER RELIEF SCULPTURE. CIRCA 1470.

THIS MAGNIFICENT ALABASTER RELIEF DEPICTS THE HEAD OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST ON A PLATE, FLANKED BY ST PETER HOLDING THE KEY TO HEAVEN ON THE LEFT AND ST THOMAS A BECKET TO THE RIGHT. BELOW CHRIST APPEARS AS THE MAN OF SORROWS RISING FROM HIS TOMB. AT THE TOP OF THE SCULPTURE TWO ANGELS CARRY AWAY THE SAINTS SOUL IN A NAPKIN.

TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL GILDING.
