Here is a look at a gorgeous mural cupboard dating back to the 16th century. This one is a Charles I carved oak mural/dole cupboard. It is a very pretty mural cupboard in exceptional colour and patination. The framed front showcases turned spindles and guilloche carved surrounds. This fine-looking example is believed to have come from the West Country.

During the olden times such pieces of furniture were made with a specific purpose. These mural cupboards or dole cupboards were built to hold food and other day-to-day provisions. They were perfect for food as the front and sides were often pierced for ventilation. Some examples of the 17th Century oak mural cupboards were also used in churches to hold bread which was distributed to the poor.
